Unlike many other ski resorts Val Thorens has continually moved with the years and improved as time has trudged along. Representing the pinnacle of ski resort development it is located in a vast bowl at altitude (2300m) and is surrounded by the largest ski area in the world. Since opening in 1971 it has developed into a stylish village using local resources and traditional architecture, while at the same time being developed with a clear plan for the future in mind resulting in a veritable skier's heaven. The resort itself is relatively compact and pedestrian friendly with most of the public amenities located centrally. This has resulted in it not only being the most famous but also the most popular in Europe.
Val Thorens caters for absolutely everyone whether they are the total novice or hardened thrill-seeking expert skier. The area has numerous ski schools that provide for skiers and snowboarders alike. For expert riders there are a multitude of off-piste routes to explore and it is possible to hire a guide to advise and instruct on the best ones and routes to and from them. Equipment can also be hired from the resort and thanks to the pre-planned nature of the area almost every corner is easy to reach by the impressive network of lifts on offer.
If skiing is not your thing then Val Thorens does not fall short on 'non-ski' possibilities. Snowshoe outings will take the intrepid explorer on any of the dozens of trails where views are quite literally breathtaking at times. Visitors can also hire toboggans or even snowmobiles for the more adventurous and the surrounding area offers much to discover and an afternoon spent seeking out hidden sights is more than rewarding.
With all the snow-centric activities and its sports centre that hosts an aqua club, gyms and personal training it is not difficult to understand why Val Thorens has been one of the premier destinations for many travelling to Europe be it for skiing or otherwise.
